The hum of the refrigerator filled the kitchen. A mundane, everyday sound. But it grated on James's nerves. The DNA test. The results. He leaned against the counter, suddenly weary, all energy drained from him. He couldn’t look at the results again, the words were etched into his mind.

He closed his eyes, remembering the Christmas mornings, the family dinners, the shared laughter. It all felt like a carefully constructed play, a performance he had unknowingly been a part of. The familiar comfort of his home felt like a cage, its walls closing in. He opened a cupboard, took out a mug, and filled it with water. Then, he poured it down the sink. He felt a sudden impulse to dismantle everything, to tear it all down and start again.
